Abstract

This doctoral thesis develops a curriculum for the formal teaching of the fundamentals of artificial intelligence (AI), specifically designed for secondary school students in the European context. It is based on an intelligent agent approach as a system situated in an environment with which it interacts autonomously to achieve goals. Consequently, the curriculum covers AI education from a broad perspective, addressing topics such as perception, actuation, representation, reasoning, and learning, among others. It proposes a STEAM methodology through which students learn by doing, programming solutions to real-world problems. A specific implementation of the curriculum was validated in European educational institutions by teachers and students over a three-year period within the Erasmus+ project, resulting in a series of instructional units and classroom tools that have had a significant educational impact. Additionally, in response to the needs identified during the validation for its final implementation, a prototype of an Intelligent Tutoring System was developed. This system, tested with students in Europe and the United States, complements the curriculum by facilitating the teaching and learning process, providing additional resources and guidance. Overall, this research represents a valuable contribution to the advancement and development of the AI community in education.
