Abstract

Based on the complex and multidimensional nature of identities, the aim of this research is to understand the influence of compulsory secondary education on the (de)construction of gender identities of Latin American-born migrant adolescents living in A Coruña (Galicia, Spain). Using a qualitative approach, I examined gender identity actions and representations in discourses and practices in six public secondary schools in A Coruña, Arteixo and Carballo. The narratives of students -mainly from Brazil, Colombia and Venezuela- in interviews and discussion groups were considered along with teacher interviews, observations and analysis of curricular materials for the subject areas Ethical Values and Civic-Ethical Education. The results reveal that: 1) the identity of migrant adolescents –traversed by multiplicity, dynamic-processuality and dialectic-relationality– is the fruit of a dialogue of gendered learning from/in school (with different degrees of co-educational adherence) and non-school settings (with family and country of origin as primary referents); 2) the socio-cultural multiple belongingness and multi-referentiality resulting from migration inspire more diverse and comprehensive femininities and masculinities; 3) migrants question more strongly the normativities they experience and demonstrate a more intensely agentic expression of gender identities.
