Abstract

The aim of this paper is to explore the relationship between discourse analysis and the practice of mediation. Specifically, it proposes reflecting on the various cognitive frames or narratives activated by the social actors involved in a conflict under mediation, as well as analysing its subsequent evolution. To this end, a case of conflict is described between the owner of a house and her neighbour over the repair of a wall. The analysis shows the incompatibility of the initial frameworks, an aspect that continues up to the moment of the conflict’s resolution in a formal act of conciliation. The conclusion points to the importance of the mediators’ meta-discursive reflection on the greater or lesser incompatibility of such frames as a prior step to the deployment of their own strategies.
