Abstract

The present PhD thesis focuses on the reduction of pollutant emissions in marine diesel engines. As alternative fuel with a view to the decarburization of the maritime sector, the use of ammonia as a carbon‐free fuel and therefore free of CO2 emissions is proposed. Regarding other undesirable emissions, this PhD thesis focuses on NOx emissions, although other pollutant emissions are also analyzed as well as the repercussion on consumption. The proposed NOx reduction measures consist, firstly, of modifying the fuel injection pattern and, secondly, of ammonia injection since ammonia can be used both as a fuel and as a NOx reducing agent. Regarding the methodology, computational fluid dynamics (CFD) techniques were used to model the engines and their emissions, multi‐criteria decision‐making (MCDM) techniques to determine the optimal injection pattern and artificial neural network (ANN) techniques to analyze a huge number of cases faster than CFD techniques.
