Abstract

This doctoral thesis addresses the integration of communities of immigrant origin in Galicia by considering the perspectives of the main agents involved. Firstly, it analyzes the discourses of immigrant associationism on integration, as well as actions carried out to this end and needs identified. At the same time, it studies the perceptions, attitudes, practices and needs of people of migrant origin with respect to their integration processes, focusing on strategies for the preservation of their languages and cultures of origin. It also interrogates the discourses about integration deployed by NGOs working in the field of immigration, as well as programs designed to promote this aim and needs identified. In parallel, it examines integration policies, particularly those of the local administration. Finally, it investigates the potential of intercultural education to contribute to integration. The analysis is based on a qualitative methodological approach in which the main research techniques consist of in-depth semi-structured interviews and discussion groups. The purpose is, fundamentally, to review and clarify existing perspectives on integration, as well as to highlight strategies for social innovation that might be implemented through fostering greater synergy between social institutions and communities of immigrant origin.
