Abstract
The aim of this study is to provide the reasons why female students do not regard IT as an option when choosing the higher education course they wish to follow. To do so we analyse the way in which upper-secondary students perceive work in the field of IT, since the choice of higher education course is closely linked to their appraisal of the profession concerned. The results indicate that these students relate IT work to professional competences, with motivation (both intrinsic and extrinsic), independence at work and balancing work with family life being seen as less relevant. The article concludes with an analysis of the most appropriate actions for encouraging girls to show a greater interest in IT
