Abstract

The interest in emotional intelligence (EI) has spread in recent years both in science and in the general population since Daniel Goleman published his bestseller in 1997. There have also been numerous interventions in education with the goal of developing socioemotional skills in children and teachers. 808 The aim of this paper is to analyze improvements in the emotional competencies of students who were trained by their teachers through 12 sessions lasting from 60 to 120 minutes. Participants were 105 fourth grade students whose mean age was nine years. The intervention material was a program called RIES (Respira Inteligencia Emocional y Social). The evaluation material was the CDE_9-13 questionnaire (Questionnaire of emotional development for children between 9 and 13 years). It is a self-report instrument that measures emotional competence and includes the subscales of consciousness, autonomy, regulation, social competence and life skills and wellbeing. Participants were measured pre and post intervention. Data indicated significant improvements in all dimensions but in the emotional regulation and life skills and well-being subscales. Results seem encouraging for 4th grade students but we should be cautious due to the disparity of results when such programs are applied to different populations
