Abstract

The arrival of the Internet has presented broadcasting companies with a tool that has evolved to become essential for their social relevance. Internet has shifted the philosophy of broadcasting. The users of today want something more than sitting on the couch and watching TV; audiences have become users and wish to feel engaged in the broadcasting experience. This new scenario poses a big challenge for broadcasting companies - betting on their websites and adapting to the ongoing changes of the Internet and of user demands. This research focuses on CRTVG, Galicia's public broadcasting company, a groundbreaking company in terms of Internet broadcasting. CRTVG was one of the first Spanish public TV stations with a website, and the very first one in broadcasting online. Today, sixteen years after implementing its website, CRTVG has had to reinvent itself due to the big changes of the Internet and to the new roles played by the user. This essay, titled "CRTVG's new website - an example of adaptation to ongoing changes on the web and on user demands", compares CRTVG's old (from late 2008 to July 13) and new website (launched on July 14 2011). To that effect, we have undertaken a formal analysis of the following fields: content, interactivity options, site usability, on demand service and information recovery options available on the website.
