Abstract

The architect Desiderio Pemas (1930-1996) graduated from the ETSAM in 1958 and that same year he got a scholarship to attend the Illinois Institute of Technology in Chicago. Influenced by Mies van der Rohe, Ludwig Hilberseimer and other decisive figures such as Arne Jacobsen, he returned ro his hometown, Vigo, where he developed his career until his death. An architect completely devoted to his profession and far from dle academic world, his work has remained practically unknown. This research, which puts the preliminary focus on the character, is centered, after ordering, classifying and cataloguing bis personal archive and his projects, on the analysis and interpretation of the latter, testing them through the sieve of the type, deepening on its systematic use by the architect. Regarding his formal structure as a project strategy, one can recognise a series of aspects that he repeats and perfects, forming this way the tools in his toolbox with which he interweaves a way of interpreting and creating architecture and which confirm his conviction and fidelity to type. This project methodology confirms Desiderio Pernas' important contribution to the field of architectural modernity in Galicia in the second half of the 20th century.
