Resumo

Do Social Networks and Smart Technologies have any impact on economic and business activity? This work finds an affirmative answer both from a logical-deductive point of view and through empirical testing. In the first place, the role of Social Networks in the technological development of countries and regions is introduced and studied taking in account EU-15 countries and Atlantic Arc regions. Next, a new theoretical model, inspired by Solow and the model of Mankiw, Romer and Weill, is elaborated, but considering a new input that has been called “Social Networks Capital”. This new model has been contrasted empirically based on data from 104 countries of the world, obtaining that the social networks have a positive impact in the generation of economic growth in the long term. A theoretical and empirical model has also been applied to all European regions, demonstrating the positive impact of social networks on innovation capacity in the 190 EU regions. Finally, the concept of SMART technologies is introduced and the effects and impacts that are being assumed for the economic and business activity at the global level are analysed.
