Abstract

The purpose of this thesis is to examine the impact of Information and Communications Technology (ICT) on dominated and/or endangered languages in the context of the Galician education system, focusing in particular on the use and impact of the internet. The first chapter (1) examines the current state of research in relation to ICT and language change, before moving on in Chapter 2 to analyse the history and characteristics of the internet, and the nature and extent of its influence on language and society. Chapter 3 examines the use of Galician in ICT for educational purposes, based on a sample of 1072 educational blogs created by teachers in Galician secondary schools. Supplementary analysis of this question is provided in Chapter 4, using data obtained from a survey of 428 members of the educational community in Galicia, in relation to the use and perception of Galician in ICT and user attitudes regarding the online presence of Galician. The final chapter (5) presents a summary of the main findings of the thesis, together with a series of corrective actions to address the shortcomings detected.
