Abstract

Severe Mental IlIness (SMI) is associated with difficulties for personal and social functioning, reducing the quality of life of people suffering from it. The aim of this study is to evaluate the efficacy of aquatic therapy techniques included in an Occupational Therapy program with patients with SMI. Methodology: Experimental randomized trial to evaluate the efficacy of aquatic therapy in patients with TMG in the Mental Health services of Mallorca. The experimental group participated in an aquatic therapy program (24 sessions for 3 months). The control group continued with the usual treatment. This study followed the CONSORT recommendations. Patients from both groups were assessed at the beginning and at the end of the intervention. The instruments used to evaluate the effectiveness were the HONOS scale, SF-36 questionnaire, BELS scale, Test UP ANO GO and a satisfaction questionnaire. Results: Aquatic therapy techniques included in the Occupational Therapy program improved quality of life, occupational performance in daily life activities, social and physical skills, and symptomatology in people with SMI. Conclusion: The aquatic therapy protocol included in the Occupational Therapy program is effective to improve occupational performance and qua lit y of life for people with SMI
