Abstract

A scientific investigation about parenting styles and their influence in children is presented in this thesis; a work that allows us to clarify the level of parents’ male chauvinism (term associated with the concepts of culture of honour, sexism, masculinity and ideology of sexual roles) and relate it with the type of education received by children. After presenting a theoretical part that stresses on the study and development of concepts of child abuse, gender violence and domestic violence, in different explanatory theories that analyse these behaviours and the descriptive characteristics of victims; in the empirical part, a study of a sample of 310 parents from the city of Corunna and surroundings is presented, that consists of different analysis of variance and linear regression analysis between the aforementioned concepts and variables such as age, sex and types of parental education (authoritarian, permissive or democratic). In addition, a review of the instrument that measures the culture of honour and is proposed the elaboration of a new test to measure male chauvinism. Finally, our results show a strong statistical relationship between sexism, age and sex of the parents and the grade of authoritarian education that parents transmit to their children.
