Abstract

Objectives: To quantify the longitudinal excursion of the median nerve in both upper limbs in patients who have suffered stroke in comparison with healthy subjectsand to analyse the relationship of nerve sliding with gender and age, as well aswith variables of the stroke group, such as the time elapsed since theinjury, sensitivity, spasticity and dependence. Material and methods: Observacional study that includes subjects with CVA (n=44) and a control group(n=44). The displacement of the median nerve was analysed during pasive articular movements in both groups and data about sensibility, Ashworth Scale, Index of Barthel and Timed Up and Go in the group with CVA was registered. Results: Neural sliding is lower in the stroke group, with differences of 3.57 and 2.17 mm on the affected and contralateral sides of the control group (p = 0) and only in the dorsal flexion of the wrist were there any differences between both sides (p = 0.033). Characteristics have been found related to the sliding with all the variables except the proprioception and gait test. Conclusions: The median nerve is mechanically altered in patients with stroke in both hemi-bodies, which may offer a different perspective on the symptoms associated with this pathology.
