Abstract

The heap, the rubble, the rubbish, the waste, make up the stratigraphy of the wastelands that pierce the contemporary city and that constitute this archipelago of nomadic abysses that oppose its sedentary and civilizing process. Architecture, urban planning, landscape design, hardly propose anything beyond cauterizing these open wounds by insisting on ploughing up these fallow places. The wasteland contains the non-historical monumental traces of the city, another possible city, «the traces of the memory of a set of futures», said Robert Smithson. It is up to us to interpret them, to project them.
