Abstract

Basketball, a sport that is widespread in our country and in other parts of the world, has acquired great importance and a growing presence not only among those who practice it or among amateurs, but also in broad sectors of society. As a language of specialization, its lexicon is characterized by the use of terminology specific to that area. This project aims to focus attention on the characteristic words of the basketball lexicon; we are particularly interested in the specialized terms that are commonly used in the world of basketball, whether by players, coaches or the press. This lexicon is the one we intend to study in this thesis. Therefore, the present project seeks to carry out a study on the terminology of basketball and form as a result a glossary with the lexicon of this field. To make this study, various resources have also served as support, such as the Virtual Library of Historical Press and the newspaper libraries of some of the most relevant sports newspapers in our country. It can be said that, due to the origin of sport, there is a strong presence of anglicisms in all the vocabulary of basketball, but we will not limit ourselves to the examination of adapted loans, we will also attend to other voices that form part of the lexicon of this sport like voices created from the Spanish language itself. The study of such a vocabulary requires us not to stick to the current vocabulary, but to know its history and trajectory over the last decades paying attention to those terms that have passed into the general language.
