Abstract

Commercial fishing is a very important socio-economic activity forGalicia. During the COVID-19 pandemic, international measures were adopted tocurb its progress. These measures had a severe impact on seafarers by limiting crewchangeover and their repatriation which, added to the challenges of managing thedisease on board, would expose fishers to and adverse health and safetycircumstance. The present paper aims to describe the health and safety challengesfaced by the galician fishing vessels seafarers after the COVID-19 pandemic, ranging from its acting capacity in a similar setting to the high rates of occupationaland maritime accidents of the fishing fleet. The final purpose of this review will beassessing different courses of action aimed at improving the labor conditions onboard fishing vessels considering objective number 8 of the SustainableDevelopment Goals.
