Resumo

Deep-sea fisheries started in 1970's as a result of overexploiting traditional stocks and since producers were looking for new resources thanks to technological advances. In most cases, these fisheries developed on the high seas where few regulations existed. Deep-ocean ecosystems are different from shallow water ecosystems, and therefore species here can be very vulnerable. How to manage those species has been a controversial issue when it comes to fishing them and the way to administer resources. Indeed there is an ongoing confrontation among producers, NGO's and Governments' approaches to this issue. This paper analyzes this three-approach confrontation by highlighting the different objectives and positions under the framework of the new European regulations.
