Abstract

The aim of the work deals with the study of the technical viability of combined cycle based propulsion systems for the thermal efficiency enhancement of marine propulsion plants applied on liquefied natural gas (LNG) carriers. The study is centred on the analysis of the applied techniques to the efficient use of the residual heat rejected by Diesel engines. The energy rejected by the Diesel engines is converted into useful work by means of a Rankine cycle cascaded with the Diesel cycle. The thermodynamic study carried out on several possible technical options allows us to determine the most efficient propulsion configuration. As consequence of this study, it is concluded that the Diesel-Rankine combined cycle using water as working fluid is the most efficient option.
