Abstract

In this paper, we have analysed the figure of baptismal godparents as components of social cohesion within the parishes in the diocese of Lugo. To do so, we first examined the neighbourhood of the godparents selected in three periods of the 18th century. This has shown that the behaviour around this variable was different in rural and urban areas. Then, the relationships created between the households in two parishes have been established in order to study in more detail the real impact that godparenthood had as a link between the families of a parish. The result shows that the socio-demographic characteristics of each one shaped a different map of social relations.
