Resumen
The possession of a Degree in Nautical and Maritime Transport is compulsory to work as a Deck Off icer on board merchant vessels. Therefore, the Degree must satisfy the requirements demanded by the STCW Convention, which establishes minimum training competencies. This forces the specific learning outcomes of the Degree to be a transposition of the STCW Convention, which imposes that certain subjects have a high practical component, and mandatory attendance, in approved simulators or in real situations for the issuance of certain professional certificates. The present study shows that, over the years, the Degree complies with the minimum ratios of results established by the University of A Coruña. However, it is observed that there are significant differences between the different subjects. The individual analysis by the subject of the results shows that the subjects that obtain the best academic results, in terms of evaluation, performance and success rates, have a strong and direct relationship with the profession, and that the STCW, imposes compulsory attendance and a high practical component. Conversely, the subjects with the worst academic results are found in the lower courses, where a lack of motivation on the part of the students can be deduced, given that they do not see a direct relation of the contents with the future professional field. Other factors that may influence these last results are the training before accessing the University, or the mismatch in the enrolment periods.
