Abstract

In this work, we present a theoretical essay on the possibilities of interrelation between collective memory and arts-based education for the teaching of Human Rights. We rely on the assumptions, supported by decades of research, that social representations of the past are carriers of moral valuesand that, due to their connection with people’s identity, they are capable of triggering powerful affectiveresponses. Contemporary art committed to the construction of inclusive narratives about traumatichistorical events is of interest for the promotion of empathy, social awareness and the enhancement ofthe perspectives of the groups most vulnerable to the violations of these rights that have been an of theusual tonics of the last century. We carry out an approach from critical pedagogy to the key points onwhich educational proposals should be formulated in this sense.
