Abstract

This article is characterized by being a theoretical-conceptual study that seeks to explore the need to rethink the paradigmatic rationality that directs the current policies and practices of adult education in the supranational European context, inviting to recover its essentiality as an educational practice emancipating from the dominant neoliberal interests and discourses. Beginning with a reflection on the ethical and practical dichotomy that adult education professionals must face, the article critically reflects on its scientific marginality due to the determination to seek its scientificity and professionalism from the perspective of modernity and seeks its empowerment in the defense of a scientific legitimacy that is nourished by non-dominant epistemologies. To this end, adult education needs to rethink and vindicate itself in its practical essentiality and in the critical reflexivity of the informal theories that emerge from particular contexts, since its specificity lies in the plurality and diversity of the knowledge that shapes it.
