Abstract

The COVID-19 pandemic forced governments to adopt drastic measures to control its spread such as confinement, social distancing and isolation, or the closure of educational institutions and sport facilities. This situation has led to a radical change in the population lifestyle. The amount of daily physical activity performed decreased while sedentary behavior increased, negatively affecting biological, psychological and social health status. With the new scientific findings and vaccines effectiveness, governments have allowed the relaxation of some specific measures implemented in the worst times of the pandemic and educational institutions have reopened again for the new academic year. The main focus is now the development and endorsement of vaccines for individuals under the age of 12. Considering that a great amount of physical activity is performed by youths in the educational sphere, it seems to be necessary to increase the weekly hours of Physical Education in the educational curriculum. Further, the tendency in the last years shows an increase in sedentary behavior and a decrease in the time expended in physical activity in this group, which leads to the alarming rise in childhood obesity. Taking into account the actual and future epidemiological situation, the implementation of coronavirus measures, such as educational institutions closure, cannot be excluded. Governments should find strategies to minimize the collateral effects and to ensure a safe and healthy back to school.
