Abstract

This doctoral thesis investigates the implications of home confinement due to SARS-CoV-2 in Spain in 11-12 year old children on their anthropometric parameters, physical fitness values and motor competence. Background: Home confinement in Spain due to SARS-CoV-2 during March and June 2020, modified certain habits in the infant-juvenile population: decrease in the time and frequency of physical activity as opposed to the increase in sedentary activities. Materials and methods: Descriptive and longitudinal observational study. Fifty children between 11 and 12 years of age (M = 11.40; SD = 0.50) participated, 33 (66%) boys and 17 (34%) girls. The Alpha-Fitness Battery, the Movement Assessment Battery for Children 2 (Movement ABC-2) and an instrument to assess food consumption, habits and practices were used for data collection. An ad hoc questionnaire was designed to collect socio-demographic data. Results: A worsening in the measured variables of anthropometry, physical condition and motor competence was observed between pre-confinement and post-confinement measurements. This worsening occurred in the total sample as well as by gender. Conclusion: There was a significant impact of SARS-CoV-2 confinement on the measured variables of anthropometry, physical fitness and motor competence, with a clear worsening.
