Abstract

The present work studies the merger of four municipalities in the province of A Coruña, as a working guide when it comes to ensuring municipal sustainability in rural areas. To identify the adequacy of the proposed administrative reform, we start from a broad territorial diagnosis of the investigated space, which will serve as a reference to achieve the objective of improving the provision of local services and justify before the citizens the modification of the municipal plant. The analysis of the investigated space reveals the need for fusion to ensure efficient, equitable and sustainable local provision. This is due to the scarcity of services, their complex accessibility, an aging population and the lack of a socio-economic base. The current situation does not guarantee the vital municipal sustainability.
