Abstract

Despite the fact that more than 100 years have passed since women can access Spanish universities in the same conditions as men, and despite the broad legal development on gender equality, the situation is still far from equal. Strong im- balances persist in the distribution of both sexes, both in students and teachers, according to areas of knowledge, being the technological areas the most strongly masculinized; as well as in the academic staff where only a third of the profes- sors are women. The causes of this imbalance are multiple but the persistence of gender stereotypes and even indirect discrimination is perceived as difficult to eliminate. This article presents some significant data on the situation of women in Spanish universities in general, but also in Galician universities. Figures highli- ght the need for networking as an effective means of giving visibility to women's activity in science and technology and contributing to and encouraging the parti- cipation of young women in the various scientific and technological fields; in this sense, the role of associations such as AMIT (Association of Women Researchers and Technologists) can play an important role in achieving effective equality be- tween women and men in Academy.
