Abstract
The "other" is a cuturally transmitted historical construct that evolves over time and, as such, is both constructed and transmitted by literature. This article presents a survey of the presence of characters of Galician origin in Portuguese popular theatre from 1755 to the beginning of the 20th century. The study examines the most common attributes associated with these characters and classifies them into two groups: features typically associated with the imagotype of Galicia, and features resulting from the grotesque amplification of the former, in keeping with the logic of exaggeration inherent in popular theatre of this type from the period.
