Abstract

This paper aims to examine the possibilities that proverbs offer for teaching mother tongue in compulsory education environments, especially in secondary school. First, we tried to characterize sayings with respect to other types of phraseological units (collocations, idioms, formulas, even quotations), to determine their peculiarities in this field. Later, the characteristics of proverbs are analyzed from the linguistic point of view to determine if, according to these intrinsic properties, the language of proverbs can be considered as a teaching model of the common language. Finally, in the last part of the article, we include many activities focused on the development of the paremiological competence of the students (so that they can reach the paremiological minimum or the paremiological optimum), as well as exercises in which proverbs are used to improve the linguistic and literary competence. These are activities organized according to different parameters: lexicon, grammar, semantics, pragmatics, linguistic variation, multimodality, rhetorical devices, etc.
