Abstract
Introduction: different colorectal cancer screening programs are implemented in Spain. Participation is key in the effectivity of this preventive strategy. The objective of this study is to identify lifestyle factors that are associated with participation in a population-based colorectal cancer screening program. Methods: multicentric study of cases (n =237) and controls (n = 171). We analyzed the effect of sociodemographic variables, personal history of cancer, frequentation of consultation, general practitioner characteristics and participation in other preventive strategies. We conducted a descriptive analysis, a bivariant analyses and a multivariate logistic regression model. Results: mean age was 59,3±5,2 years; 52,4% were women and 72,2% had a partner. Regarding to clinical variables, 20,0% had family history of colorectal. The participation in flu vaccination campaign was 32,4% and, in the case of women, 95,9% participated in breast cancer screening. With regard to bivariant analysis, individuals that participated in colorectal cancer screening were significantly older (OR=1,07; CI95%:1,02-1,11), had a partner (OR=2.13, CI95%: 1.37-3.30) and higher education (OR=1.55, CI95%: 1.04-2.31). They also participated more in flu vaccination campaigns (OR=2,23, CI95%:1,43- 3,46). In multivariant analysis, variables significantly associated to the participation in colorectal cancer screening were having a partner (OR=2,00; CI 95%: 1.21-3.27) and participating in flu vaccination campaign (OR=2,20; CI 95%: 1.32-3.65); meanwhile older age’s tended to statistically significance (OR=1,04; CI95%:(0,99-1,09). Conclusions: participation in population-based colorectal cancer screening program is associated with having a partner, being older, and participating in other preventive strategies. Keywords: Colorectal cancer, cancer screening, life style, primary care.
