Abstract

Health promotion is considered a main purpose of Occupational Therapy practice. Similarities between health promotion and our discipline have been widely recognized and discussed through different institutional and empirical sources, but implementation of health promotion can be difficult due to multiple factors. Confusion regarding conceptual aspects or action strategies can constitute a barrier to health promotion in Occupational Therapy. The purpose of this work is to provide context about health promotion and its relationship with Occupational Therapy, by critically addressing different aspects about the health-promotion potential value of occupations. Finally, we describe how newly introduced modifications in the Fourth Edition of the Occupational Therapy Practice Framework of the American Occupational Therapy Association can contribute to consolidate intervention opportunities for occupational therapy in individual and public health promotion.
