Abstract

The relationship between Turkey and the European Union is framed by the customs union agreement that entered into force in the context of the accession process of the candidate country. However, this agreement has become obsolete today and must be reviewed since it is limited to the elimination of tariffs and quantitative restrictions on manufacturing and processed agricultural products. Firstly, a literature review of studies which apply gravity models and other methodologies to measure the impact of the agreement is carried out. Secondly, an analysis of the Turkish trade pattern is included, using data in gross and added value terms, in order to study the country's insertion in global value chains. Third, the determinants of Turkey's exports are analyzed using a gravity model. The model includes a dummy variable that represents the customs union and other variables that include political and religious factors. Finally, Turkish agricultural trade is studied using a gravity model. In this model, the impact of tariff and technical barriers is evaluated as well as other factors, which will contribute to the definition of a new agreement between Turkey and the European Union.
