Abstract

Topography is one of the main physical factors that can affect the spatial variability of magnetic minerals in soils. Magnetic susceptibility is related to the concentration of magnetic minerals and therefore linked to the degree of soil degradation and the soil conservation status. In this contribution, four topographic factors have been analysed and related to values of magnetic susceptibility in order to infer the effect of the topographic factors on the spatial variability of the magnetic minerals in soils. The study area is a cultivated field in the Spanish Pre-Pyrenean border. The geomorphometric landscape analysis assesses and assigns the value of a given topographic factor in each píxel of the digital elevation model in the studied field. The results show a direct and statistically significant relationship between the spatial distribution of the concentration of the magnetic minerals in cultivated soils and topographic factors, such as elevation and slope, which affect soil redistribution processes.
