Sustainable development goals

Abstract

A recent development within the tourism sector has been the introduction of sustainability criteria and the emergence of what is referred to as sustainable tourism. The purpose of this study is to examine sustainable tourism at a local level in Spain. The survey examines trends in sustainable development, reviews the literature on sustainable tourism, and studies the main features of strategic sustainable tourism planning in two Spanish cities, Zaragoza and Barcelona. The cities were selected for their representativity of different types of local tourism. The objectives of the study are to assess the importance of sustainability in the tourism sector, and to analyse the Strategic Sustainable Development Plans of Zaragoza and Barcelona. The study uses a qualitative data collection methodology, in keeping with the most common approach in international literature on sustainable tourism at a local level.
