Abstract

This thesis focuses on the artwork of Ana Hatherly in the context of Portuguese Art. The scope of the research is based on the artist’s vast production, which is worthy of a thorough investigation in order to understand her unique art more widely. The influence of the latest vanguards in Hatherly’s work is the starting point to deepen the knowledge and research the artist’s process. A constant seek for answers and curiosity led to the particular creations of Ana Hatherly, revealing an artwork corpus of vanguard and particular authenticity. The artist reveals a great capacity of interaction and inter relation between creative fields such as writing, research, teaching, cinema, performance, drawing and painting, which enabled renewed confluences and strong experiences claiming a relived and demanding reflection. Her investigation on the Barroque provided an excellent window of expectations and an unusual stamina to the field, enabling a return to the world of graphic composition based on the exercise and commitment of drawing and image, which turned out as a way of caption and comprehension, a telluric stimulus of emotions and feelings, visual spectrum of the gesture and word as a visible reminiscence seen from the transition of the hearing universe to the visual field, making reading the everlasting place of expansion, a way of understanding and perceiving the world.
