Abstract
Mies van der Rohe's project for a concert hall consitutes a turning point in his professional career, being considered as the starting point of his quest for "universal space": a space entirely free of internal structural supports. Embodied in the form of a collage from a photograph of a project by Albert Kahn, it is also an example of the proximity between his professional and academic facets, as ir is a master's degree thesis project that was begun by the student Paul Campagna, but never complated. This research project aims to explore the concept that was proposed by Mies at the start of the 1940s, presenting the project by Leonard Klarich from 1950, the only one that was developed as a part of the graduate programme of the IIT that solves the same functional problem, with the aim of framing it within the process of searching for "universal space" that began with the collage of 1942.
