Abstract

Thanks to the development of new technologies such as the IoT, it is possible to consider an in-depth knowledge of the operation of a ship, through its replication in the digital world. This is not only a technological challenge, but also a programmatic one, due to the complexity of the ship as a whole. It is necessary to define digital platforms, visual interfaces, architectures for information management, 4D models, simulators, algorithms, analytics, machine learning, advanced intelligence, way of deployment, scalability, etc. The physical part connected to the virtual part, allows reliable predictions of the behaviour of equipment and systems onboard. The digital twin materializes the possibility of setting up all these entities which manage the digital information and leads to an increase in the value of the basic processes which take place during the life cycle of the vessel. The work presented evaluates the hardware and software requirements for the implementation of a digital twin and its associated simulation models, which would allow adapting maintenance routines and inspection to the actual condition of said equipment. Moreover, we are facing a paradigm change, as the designs of the ships could be continuously evaluated and optimized according their real behaviour.
