Abstract
This article examines the migratory relationship between Spain and Latin America, focusing on the historical, social and economic explanations for the recent emigration of Spanish nationals to various Latin American countries as a result of the economic crisis in Spain. It analyses the intensity and magnitude of emigration flows to Latin America, the choice of country of destination, and the sex and age distribution of this new migration. This migratory pattern is compared to the recent Spanish emigration to other European countries, with a view to establishing and explaining the similarities and differences between those who choose to go to Latin America and those who opt for Europe. The methodology is based on a sociodemographic analysis of the results of the Residential Variation Statistics (RVS), compiled by the National Institute of Statistics (INE) of Spain.
