Abstract

The aim of this paper is to show the earliest written records in the Spanish language of the gastronomic words of Japanese origin bentō, cha and chanoyu, kaki, meshi, miso, mochi, sakazuki, shiru and shōchū. For this purpose, this work examines the data obtained from a corpus composed by historical, religious, and civil texts by comparing it with information provided by Vocabulario de Japón, the translation of Vocabulario da Lingoa de Iapam (Nippo Jisho) published in 1630. Moreover, considering previous studies about Asian words in Spanish (Fernández Mata 2015; Knowlton 1959) and Portuguese (Dalgado 1919), this work reveals new data about the introduction and use as well as the lexicographical treatment of these words of Japanese origin.
