Abstract
Juan José Arenas has undoubtedly been one of the greatest bridge designers in Spain. His work as a designer has been accompanied by articles and books where, in addition to providing the technical and structural rationale behind these works, he has also sought to vindicate the humanist aspect in the reconciliation of engineering works, with particular sensitivity for aesthetic and landscaping challenges. In this article, which forms part of the intervention by the author in the UIMP course in Santander, dedicated to Arenas, in August 2016, an attempt is made to illustrate the path that has evolved over time through specific bridge designs. The company founded by the designer at the end of the nineties, “Arenas & Associates” continues this development today, as a manifestation of certain practices in which due recognition is given to their collaborators, in a world in which engineering is so much in need of the works and teachings of civil engineers such as Arenas.
