Abstract

In this article, we will approach demographically the recent change in the volume and direction of the migratory flows in Galicia since the beginning of the economic recession. The first years of the 21st century were characterized by the arrival of large inflows of immigrants, mainly coming from abroad and migrating ‘autonomously’, rather than being linked to the return of former emigrants and its descendants. However, the recession has implied a turning point for migratory movements, characterized by a significant reduction in the immigrant flows and a rise in outflows, taking the form of return migration but also of emigration. These changes in migratory flows have their consequences in the demographic growth of Galicia, a point that will be considered in this article. We will also deal with the changes in the stock of migrant population.
