Abstract

The current widespread use of SMS (short-messaging service) as an alternative communications channel in order to articulate expressions of collective issues, creates a new scene where users re-invent the prescribed industrial uses for mobile phones through the customization of protocols. The present paper firstly adresses such disparity between the discourse of industry and the user-driven transformation of communication practices. Then, the paper discusses the relationship between Progress and Machinery from the historical and sociological perspectives within Lewis Mumford´s (1895-1990) theoretical thought. Finally, a proposal of categorisation of the social uses of SMS is presented, using empirical data and evidence on the Spanish case.
