Resumen
The aim of this study was to explore and describe how families experience participation in occupations of older people with cognitive impairment after their admission in a residential facility. It is a qualitative study framed in the phenomenological paradigm. The study was conducted between December 2011 and May 2012. The information was collected through semi-structured interviews. After analyzing the results two categories emerged. The first category is related to the mismatch occurring between families and the state of disease of the elderly that produces feelings of paternalism and infantilization. The second category shows the decrease in common activities between families and the elderly and the manifestation of negative emotions attached to this fact. Finally it is concluded that the reduction or finalization of participation in occupations and joint activities is the "clash" of the family with his family now has a disease and not exclusively by the residential change The potential contribution of occupational therapy to improve this situation is discussed.
