Abstract
Since Pollard established the system for analysing home advantage in 1986, it has been analysed in relation to many sports with the result that its existence and the possible causes for it have become evident. However, in relation to handball no previous studies have been made and there are very few references in other sports to investigate this in women's competitions. For this reason this study aims to determine whether home advantage exists in Spanish handball female. 6138 Spanish league handball matches were analysed from the 1997/98 season to 2007/8 season, noting down the final results of the games played at home and away and the competition categories. Once home advantage was established a contrast was made through the Wilcoxon signed-rank test (to value the HA signification), Mann-Whitney U test (to compare the two female leagues HA), and Pearson and Spearman bivariate correlations (to value the association between HA, total points and ranking). In Spanish handball female there is a home advantage of 59,7%, which varies according to competition category, increasing as competition category decreases and classification improves.
