Abstract

The analysis of imports has traditionally been based on the linearity assumption, even though empirical evidence suggests more complex dynamics. Their behaviour is mainly influenced by the level of economic activity and prices, and economic theory maintains a linear long-run relationship linking these variables. This paper investigates whether short-run deviations of imports from this equilibrium also show a linear evolution or not. Empirical evidence based on Spanish imports of goods reveals the existence of non-linearity in their short-run deviations and it is also demonstrated that the underlying factor behind this asymmetric behaviour is the cyclical state of the economy
