Abstract

Differential scanning calorimetry was used to study the dynamic crystallization behaviour of isotactic polypropylene in blends with between 10 - 40% by weight of an ethylene-vinyl alcohol copolymer. The influence of a ethylene-methacrylic acid copolymer, Ion.Na+ as a compatibilizing agent was analysed. The crystallization temperature of iPP slightly increased in the presence of EVOH in the binary blends, and was dependant on the blend composition, reflecting the existenceof a nucleating effect on the crystallization of iPP due to the presence of small crystals of EVOH formed in the polypropylene melt. The presence of the ionomer in the ternary blends eliminates the nucleating effect, which can be attributed to a compatibilization phenomenon, although this does not modify the crystallization behaviour of EVOH.
