Abstract

The connection between Villafranca del Bierzo, in Leon, and Cereixal, in Lugo, has led to the long awaited completion of the A-6 Northwest Motorway between Madrid and Coruna. The section has successfully overcome the greatest challenge on the entire motorway: that of cr.ssing the mountains and complex terrain in the area of the Piedrafita Pass and has finally opened up Galicia to the rest of Spain by means of a high capacity road network. This connection has required the construction of 41 viaducts, 6 double tunnels and one artificial double tunnel. The 53.5 kilometre stretch of motorway is completely integrated within t e beautiful surrounding landscape of Piedrafita and has led to a 20 minute reduction in travel time wit very much improved comfort and safety.
