Abstract

Rita Fernández Queimadelos, the third woman in Spain to receive a degree in architecture, carried out an intense professional career from the time she finished her studies in 1940 up until her retirement in the mid-nineteen seventies. Her professional activity can be organized in two periods; the first one was in Madrid, where she was offered a position at the DGRD, in the Department of Architecture. The second period was carried out in Murcia. During the first period at the DGRD, she conducted a series of housing projects. For the purposes of this paper we will be analyzing those carried out in Carabanchel. The analysis of the Carabanchel projects, taking into consideration the study of previous architectural models and factors as well as the place and organization of the houses designed, will provide us with insight into the role of the solutions employed by the DGRD to face the need for housing at that time. The analysis of this pioneer Galician female architect´s housing projects in Carabanchel during this period will also bring into light quotidian architecture which shapes daily life.
