Abstract

This paper presents the results of a pilot research carried out in Honduras dealing with the management of a common good (water) and with the sexual division of labour regarding the administration of this basic source for human reproduction via community boards. The role of women within the researched structures shows an underrepresentation of women as well as lack of power. The overarching Honduran context is characterised by a high involvement of women in agricultural labour despite not having access to land property, this reinforcing patriarchal structures and economic dependency on land owners. For our fieldwork we have focused on the seven municipalities of the Fonseca gulf, part of the NASMAR community. We have analysed the agency of municipalities and we carried out a pilot case study in two communities aiming to define the gender gaps existing in both communities as well as to stablish the equity horizon, altogether with the communities, for an equitable management of water.
