Resumen

During the last decades otters have been recolonized the central basin of Asturias as a consequence of the improvement of the water quality due to the decreasing of coal mine activities, the closing of coal cleaning plants and the implement of water treatment plants. Suspension solids andammonium seem to be conditioning presence of otters and make a barrier effect to avoid the recovery of some surrounding areas. Organic matter of wastewaters from urban settlements seems to be less important but it can delay otter recovery and explain some local absences in present otter range in central Asturias. The threshold of IBMWP to constrain the presence-absence of otter seems to be the class III “doubtful” (36-60 points).
